Microphone in front of lights

I’m a member of the fantastic Some Voices York pop choir. It’s a 5-part harmony pop and rock choir. You don’t have to be able to read music and there are no auditions.

This term, we’re singing ‘Duel of the Decades’ with everything from Whitney Houston to Chappell Roan!

Gig – Monday 31 March 2025: Duel of the Decades at The Crescent

Location: The Crescent, 8 The Crescent, York YO24 1AW

Timings:

  • Choir arrival time 6pm for a full run through to sound check
  • Doors open at 7.30pm.
  • The show starts at 8pm. Depending on whether we have a support act, it will last for around an hour and a half with no interval.

Dress code: It gets warm under the stage lights, so light layers recommended.

You’ll be able to get changed/do make-up in the toilets or the Green Room.

FAQs for choir members

How can I get extra practice online?

Scroll down one of the songs on Airtable.

Do I really need to sing without the lyrics for the gig?

If you can! It sounds so much better if you’re singing ‘out’ rather than constricting your throat by looking down. If you’re really not certain about a line, just mime!

I’m really nervous about singing live. What’s it like?

Personal note from choir ranger Helen R. (Alto 1) : I get it, I joined the choir to sing, not perform. But after five gigs at The Crescent, I can assure you it’s a real blast! The lights mean you really only see Hannah conducting, rather than the audience. And I was surprised how naturally the lyrics and timings came back to me.

At the end of the day, we’re just having fun, and the audience will mostly be friends, family and people curious about joining. So don’t worry. We’re not on The Voice!

Is there a place to leave valuables at The Crescent?

Yes, we have access to the upstairs Green Room.

Where’s the best place to park?

There’s limited parking outside the venue. Parking in Nunnery Lane a 5-10 minute walk away is probably a better option. Evening parking is from 6pm – 8am.

Is there a place nearby to get food?

If you get peckish, there’s a mini-Sainsburys on the corner. And many takeaways…

What’s The Crescent like?

It’s a former working men’s club with a stage, an area for the audience and a bar. It will be set up cabaret style with tables and chairs for the audience. The bar will be open before, during and after the gig. The venue is fully accessible. Here’s a link to The Crescent website.

I have another question. Can you help?

Yes of course. Please ask on WhatsApp or message Helen Reynolds privately.
